    Intermittent starting problem fixed

So now and then my 2008 soft tail was taking a few presses on the start button to fire up ,i cleaned the start switch then cleaned the contacts on the relay under the seat and it was fine again.

I had ordered a new relay so had that in my draw .

Well it did the same thing yesterday so I put the new relay in ,starts every time now so shows the relay can have a intermittent fault .

Just thought i would share this info .

    Rob.

    Good info.
Relays can indeed go intermittent; starter relay bad enough. An intermittent ignition relay is potentially fatal.
Departing for work at 05.30 one Winter`s morn, I got a half mile from home when the lights went out & engine died. Like someone turned off the ignition at the key.
Coasted blindly to a halt, between the kerbs on an unlit country lane.
Biggest worry at that point was being run over from behind by a local Hooray in his Range Rover.
Stuffed the bike in the hedge.
Trudged home through the darkness, & pinched the car off the missus.
    Drove to work.
Returning to the bike in the evening, it started & ran fine. For a half-mile. Then it stopped as before.
Swapping the starter relay for the dodgy igniton relay did the trick.
    Gotcher you b%stard.
Moral here is, if something goes intermittent, don`t ignore it cos it`ll catch you out.
BTW bike involved was not HD. But they all have relays, eh.

As are alarm systems that have been wired into the ignition circuit instead of the starting circuit. If the alarm system throws it's hand in due to constant vibration the ignition could be cut mid-ride at any point even on a bend at 60-70 mph. Bad experience!
