LED Indicators - what are position lights?

My Fat Bob arrives next week, and I’m busy drooling over various customisation options.

One thing that bugs me is the old fashioned bulb indicators front and back, especially with that massive LED front lamp.

I really like the look of these German made Heinz Bike front ones (they do rear set called Winglets too) but I’m not really understanding the choice between With Position Lights and without.

Lots of googling has inferred that its like a parking light on some bikes which you can do something clever with the key and leave a front and rear light on, but nothing I can find suggests that Harley’s have that functionality.

    Any thoughts?

    Hi Adam,

It does seem strange that H-D chose to fit incandescent bulb indicators on the 2018 Fat Bob, especially with that huge rectangular LED headlight up front.

Position lights is simply another name for running lights, as soon as the ignition is switched on the indicators com on and stay on as long as the bike is running. The running light function is meant for the USA market, it's law over there for motorcycles to have running lights so that they're more visible to other road users.

Those German indicators look a bit on the small side, the could be a case of form over function as I can't see that they'll be very bright. Why not buy LED replicas of the stock indicators, a set of four can be bought for under £60 on eBay including delivery. I have fitted front LED indicators to my Iron 883, they work great and are very bright. The indicators have aluminium bodies in either gloss black powder coating or chrome, they come with three sets of lenses, amber, clear and red, I'm using the clear lenses on my Iron. I've also fitted LED running lights on the fork sliders.

Hope that's given you food for thought.

I guess I prefer the look of the custom ones. If I was going to stay with the stock look, these are cool:

Eagle Lights 2" Led Turn Signal Kit For Harley Davidson Front (1157) and Rear (1157) LED Turn Signal Kit Add Smoked Lenses https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073G294..._xGsjBbZTJ73WF

But I can’t find any uk spec rear ones which aren’t Red LED’s. I’ve emailed Eagle so we’ll see...

The Heinz ones are apparently CE approved so should be pretty bright.

    Thanks Adam,

Those Eagle lights are very expensive at £192 for four LED inserts.

It's your bike and you can customise it as you want.

You've bought it in time to miss the 25% import tariff, hope you enjoy your new Fat Bob. They are an awesome looking machine.

I hadn’t realised but the rear lights are already led’s on the Fat Bob.

God knows why they didn’t do the fronts too.

There’s an official HD reflector assembly replacement for the fronts, it’s about £117 from the dealer, but they want another £60-80 to fit them.

So I guess I’ll wait and maybe get the Heinz ones later on, going to end up costing about the same if I get my friendly independent Harley specialist who charges £45 an hour onto it

You don`t need to have them fitted, they fit just like you were changing a normal bulb. Also you don`t need the load levelling resistor in the kit they work great on their own, the hardest bit about fitting them is getting the original lenses off.

    Hi Adam,

Glad I read your thread. love those Heinz indicators. They'll be bright and indiscreet. perfect for my bike. Off over to the web site to check them out. Hope they do some kind of matching rear set.

Good morning, I got the Harley ones. Cost a bit more than £117 if I remember correctly. So glad I did they were so easy to fit and it took me all of five minutes. Probably early next week I`ll upload a couple of photos if you like
