There was a problem with the fuel tank swelling on both the XR1200 and the XR1200X, see the images below.

Some tanks were replaced under warranty, but not all were. That is something to look out for when buying.

There is an XR1200 owners group forum, it might be worth checking it out for information from XR1200 owners.

Thanks for the info, i am on one of the US forums and was kinda aware of the tank problem but didnt realise the seriousness of it. Also sadly the bike sold before viewing but if anyone knows of one for sale? i would be interested. Thanks again all.

    Hi wideride,
I had the XR1200 for 5 years and it was a great bike. Not the "X" version with uprated suspension, but the original model.
The tank swelling problem was virtually exclusive to the USA where the petrol mix is poorer than in the UK (extra ethanol or something?), which combined with the warmer climate caused the tank to swell and pop the tank cover. I can't remember any UK bikes suffering.
The best mod you can do is the "Scotty Mod" which alters the primary gearing and provides a less revvy, longer legged ride - check if the bike you want to buy has had this mod done (named after the guy who came up with the idea and it transformed my ride). Basically the original bike was too highly geared and you were never in the right gear for corners, and the engine vibes were unpleasant at fast cruising speeds (around 85mph) - Scotty Mod totally sorts this.
The engine and gearbox are excellent with bags of torque, but the bike is quite heavy for a sporty bike. Also the stock suspension on my non X version was the cheapest rubbish, so that got binned early on!

I had an Orange XR (not an X)for 3.5years prior to my current bike.
Ever had a problem with the tank swelling it is predominately a US thing due to fuel additives they use.

You say you are on the US forum, try the UK one, very knowledge ppl there, (not just saying that cos I’m an admin there).

There are a number of XR’s on eBay currently, including my old one (advertised up in peterlee with the reg **** HOG)

The tank swelling isn't just a USA fuel thing, the XR1200X photos are from Delboy's Garage videos, I believe that Del lives in Deepest Darkest Dorset.

Here is one of Del's videos about his tank swelling problem on his XR1200X.

thanks all, watching them on ebay (where there is a gorgeous black one sadly swollen and will only take a ton less) and seen a few swollen on youtube uk and that dellboy one. Not sure what to do now lol. Also yeah i swapped out my primary and final gears on my first Harley a Superglide many years ago for the same gearing issue. I went 34/64 if i remember correctly. Thanks all again.
