    Number plate beneath rear light?

Never one to shy from displaying my boundless ignorance, is there a small, cheap bracket available to move the number plate from above the mudguard to below, under the rear light? (Not side moutned.) I don't want to move the indicators, add LEDs or cut the mudguard, just move the number plate. I've looked but all I can find is 'rear fender mounting licence plate' kits (with lights), which seems like a huge amount of guff for just a small change. What have I missed here - lots of Harleys have number plates hanging off the back??

    Cheers,

    Chris

The only thing you might of missed is the need for it to be lit.

Certainly on my bike the rear light has a clear window to throw light upward at the number plate.

Apart from the light is this the sought of thing?

There is no law to say the number plate should be lit from below or above - but there is a law that states you must have a rear reflector.

Should be white light for the number plate.

You can buy registration mounting bolts with built in lights on eBay, they start at less than £3.00 a pair up to about £10 a pair depending on specification and material. They come in black or chrome finish.

Cheers. Just had a look and it appears to be a bit contradictory.

Seems to suggest it should be fitted but somewhere else I saw it isn't part of the MOT.

A red reflector must be mounted centrally and vertically on the rearmost part of the motorcycle.

The red reflector is mandatory for the MOT test.

Here is a copy of an MOT testers checklist.

Wow! Thanks Andy - I just never twigged about the little clear part of the rear light!

Sort of - it's still a bit chunky though. The must be a way of mounting the T number plate bracket (say, upside down) under the mudguard. A couple of holes in the top of the plate for plastic screws and it's sorted... except for the light thing. (Though Dave's post shows some really cheap ways to sort that - thanks again Dave.) Perhaps it could be nailed to the reflector holder? Maybe a clear cut-out under the rear light, like the top one, but smaller?

Anyway, all this shows that it's a long way from straight forward (maybe that's why everyone goes for side mounted plates?).

Thank you all again: this is such an education for me!

    Cheers,

    Chris

Your J&P link showed this alternative:Sparto Style Taillight. (I have no idea what 'sparto' is.)

It's more like it, though plastic would be better than chrome and I suppose the lens could be changed to clear somehow. Not sure how it's suppose to fit though - are you supposed to drill the mudguard?

Anyway, it's food for thought. Also, disapointing that it's so much more of a phaff than I thought. (As is life, I have found...)

    Cheers Andy,

    Chris

Dave, I note that you have a mudguard mounted plate on your Iron. I've seen several of these mounts on eBay - do you have to cut the mudguard for it to fit?

    Cheers,

    Chris
