Angry '95 Sportster regulator wiring problem.....

I have a stupid problem that's starting to drive me nuts.

I had an apparent alternator fault, a specialist said probably the rotor magnets had come unglued, so I stripped it out and in fact they were ok.

    So I changed the stator.

On starting the bike, I noticed I still had no charge to the battery.

At this point, I assumed it was a regulator problem, but then I discovered that at least two of the six soldered copper bullet connectors I'd had to use to extend the regulator wiring due to the reg being hit by the front mudguard under max braking and fork deflection, had come undone....

I decided to shorten the mudguard and replace the regulator in its original position, where it gets a better earth anyway.

    Here's my problem

If you look at the regulator with the cooling fins towards you, the three wires on the right , which is the wire that feeds DC to the battery?
This is not usually a problem, or even something you'd be likely to know as there is a 2 pin plug to the alternator, and a one pin plug to the battery. Only a problem if you have cut the wiring!

It's easy to check, just needs a simple continuity test, one tester probe in the one pin plug, and then find the one wire that shows continuity.....it doesn't matter about the two pin alternator wires, they can go either way round.

Does anyone happen to know which of the three is the DC feed?

Is it by any chance the central of the three wires as they exit the regulator?

I don't want to fritz out my regulator by getting it wrong....I've already bought and fitted a new stator which was not necessary!

Unfortunately I only have a Haynes manual here and it shows a 4 wire regulator for the 95 Sportster, and the diagram for the '94 though showing a 3 wire unit, is impossible to tell which way's up, right, left, or backwards.

Here I have a 1997 diagram from the net which looks more like what I am looking at...
It shows the DC lead as being the RIGHT side wire, if the reg is fin side towards you and horizontal.

    I hope it's right!

    Hello Hal,

I'm no electrical expert, but I know that Haynes manuals are total crap.

I'll PM you how to download a free 1986 to 2003 Sportster manual, it's far better than the Haynes one.

    Hope it helps you.

    Cheers,

    Dave.

I once posted the link for the Carl Salter free H-D manual download website on the USA H-D Forums, I got a ticking off from their administration for doing so and they told me it's illegal to publicise that site under USA Federal Law. I was asked politely to remove the link, which I did.

I tend to tread carefully on all H-D forums now. But now you've mentioned it zigzaggler1972, I don't need to.

    Thanks guys.

I used a bit of lateral thinking and between the Haynes 4 wire regulator for '95, and the diagram I posted from the web, I finally worked it out.

Did no good though, I have to conclude the regulator is FUBAR so will order one tomorrow.

My local HD dealer sells HD regulators for 140€, or generic for 55€
    Guess which I'll order....
