I know what you mean about the old Moto Guzzi side stand AL, I had two of them from 1980, a V50 and an SP1000. The side stands were mounted right at the front of the bottom frame rail as on this 850 Le Mans. It's a shame about the poor side stand, because the Guzzi centre stand is the best motorcycle stand that I've ever used, two fingers was all that was needed to lift the SP1000 onto it's centre stand.

Many Guzzi owners fitted the stand from a California which was considerably longer than the ones fitted to other Guzzi models. The bottom frame rail had to be changed too as the longer stand had a different mounting.

Modern Guzzi's have the side stand in a more accessible position.

The worst ever side stand that I've encountered was on my old Laverda triple, the stand was short and mounted at a steep angle. Laverda's were tall and top heavy, parked on anything other than a level surface the bike would topple over on the stand. Here is a Jota with the offending stand. The centre stand was a good 'un though.
