Spare keys for your Sportster? Buyer beware.

Some Sportster owners require spare keys for their bikes for a number of reasons, lost key, broken key, worn out key or a spare one or two keys just in case. I was the latter, I wanted a couple of spares so that I could keep my genuine H-D keys in good condition.

If you order spare keys from a Harley-Davidson dealership, you have to supply them with your bikes V.I.N. number and proof of ownership. They will order your keys from H-D, and they'll charge you up to £50 for a pair. Delivery of your keys can take from four to six weeks.

I saw a seller on the Bang Good UK market place selling blank keys to fit Sportster 883cc models from 1970 to 2015, my Iron 883 is a 2011 model so it fits into the sellers time frame. I ordered two for a very reasonable price of just over £3, the keys took about four weeks to be delivered and they looked fine to my untrained eye. I took them to my local independent key cutter, he told me that the profile didn't look right compared to my genuine key, so he only charged me £2 for cutting both of them. When I tried the keys in my ignition lock, they didn't fit, well they did cost me just over £5 for the pair to be bought and cut.

Here are some photos, the copies are the brass coloured ones.

What I didn't know at the time is that H-D have produced five different profile keys for the Sportster, see below.

My genuine key is the 'C' code series.

If you're looking for spare keys for your Sportster, bear in mind that you need to check for yourself that you're ordering the correct blank for your year and model, don't do what I did and trust what the seller says. There are bargain key blanks out there, so you don't need to go through H-D and pay their rip-off prices.

Buyer beware, there are dishonest sellers out there, but there are great sellers out there too.

    Cheers Flash,

I'll have to think about that one.

I might be wrong, I might be right, I might be wrong, I might talk shite!

You're right, I do talk shite, the first keyless Sportster's were in 2014.

    Sorry Flash.
