The crank position sensor is a kind of alternator that as the engine rotates the voltage will fluctuate between 1- 5 volts ac as the teeth pass the inductive sensor (approximately 3 volts minimum is required by the ecm.) Easiest way to test it is disconnect the sensor from the ECM go and buy a 5 volt LED from Maplins and connect it across the two wires, crank the engine and if the LED pulses it is working. Many voltmeters are not sensitive enough to sense the rapid voltage fluctuations and ideally an oscilloscope is best.

Did you look at your RPM indicator? Apparently if your battery is at full capacity and your RPM indicator is reading approximately 3000 rpm whilst cranking the sensor is ok?

Your fault could also be coil related?

    Good luck!

Is the tacho is reading on cranking the engine?

All the information I have found using Google.

There may well be a two pin Hellerman Deutsch small connector in the loom before it gets to the ECM which would make diagnosis a damn sight easier if there is?

I believe this is the box into which the crank position sensor sends it's signal.

You're very welcome! Good find, it is at that plug you need to carry out your diagnosis, the sensor end not the ECM.

Now you have 'crossed The Pond' and posed your issue on a forum over there you will undoubtedly get more help. It is mostly from there I gleaned the information above.

I have asked before but is your tacho reading on crank over? If it is you may be wasting your time with the sensor? Let us know how you get on!

    Good luck!
